Top summer reading recommendations

  1. Anthony Doerr’s “All the Light We Cannot See”

"In the fascinating book of Anthony Doerr, the events take place during the Second World War in France. The author describes two entwined paths of a young German solider and a young French girl who is blind. It is a magnificently crafted tale with great ideas, dialogues and message. The sentences are written with great skill and precision. You should read it for its magic, sheer beauty of the story and immersive character of its words."

  1. E. Lockhart’s "We Were Liars”

"Good books to read this summer should definitely include “We Were Liars” by E. Lockhart. It tells a story of Cady who spends her time on an island. On the 15th summer there, she experiences an accident. Cady can’t remember what happened, but that accident resulted in terrible headaches. You have no idea what will happen in the end!"

  1. Laline Paull’s “The Bees”

"There’s a hierarchy in the world of bees that’s full of queen-worship. And unfortunately for Flora, she is born in the bottom of this hierarchy. However, her abnormal abilities give her the access to higher levels of the hierarchical pyramid. This book is a glimpse into the world of honeybees, which stands on the verge of destruction."

  1. Leslie Jamison’s "The Empathy Exams: Essays”

"The essays of Leslie Jamison are beautiful, wise, absorbing, very humane and uncomfortable at the same time. I can’t recollect how many times I have recommended this book to others. In my humble opinion, this is the best nonfiction book of 2014."

  1. Stephen King’s “Mr. Mercedes”

"Did you know that summer vacation and Stephen King’s books are a great mix? “Mr. Mercedes” tells the story of a killer who plows through the crowd in his Mercedes and by doing so sets the chains of tragic events in motion. As almost all books by King, it’s very well-written and incredibly suspenseful."

  1. Elizabeth Warren’s “A Fighting Chance”

"No matter whether you’re a conservative or a liberal, every side needs a mastermind, which can transform complicated ideas into the language that everyone can understand. Elizabeth Warren, the champion of the left wing, is a genius communicator. Her determination, passion, and integrity are above any praise and her new memoir is a great proof of her talent."
